What is Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, Inc.?

Domestic Abuse Family Shelter is a non-profit United Way agency dedicated to breaking the cycle of domestic abuse by maintaining a program with a broad base of services and community support as well as local and state involvement.

Domestic Abuse Family Shelter provides domestic violence victims with free shelter, childcare, victim advocacy, and counseling in order to give them the skills, tools, and understanding to make choices leading to violence-free living and to raise awareness of domestic violence in the community at large.

Who does Domestic Abuse Family Shelter serve?

Domestic Abuse Family Shelter strives to provide accessible, culturally relevant, domestic violence, and trauma-informed services for primarily women and children exposed to family violence, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and elder abuse. Victims also include populations of men, LGBTQ, teens, undocumented immigrants, persons with Limited English Proficiency, elderly, and persons with disabilities. All services provided by DAFS are free of charge.

Domestic Abuse Family Shelter serves 11 counties in Mississippi which include: Jones, Jasper, Smith, Wayne, Covington, Jefferson Davis, Marion, Lamar, Forrest, Perry, and Greene counties. DAFS also serves victims/survivors and abusers coming from outside this area if a need exists and space permits.

The Domestic Abuse Family Shelter offers the following services:

  • A toll-free, 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week crisis telephone line answered by trained, professional staff and/or trained volunteers.
  • Temporary emergency shelter (includes the provision of temporary housing, food, transportation, case management, individual and group counseling, referrals, personal hygiene items, clothing, special needs assistance, etc. for up to 90 days in Laurel or Hattiesburg.)
  • Non-residential community counseling- includes counseling to victims/survivors not residing in a shelter in Laurel/Hattiesburg on a daily basis during the week by a licensed counselor.
  • Childcare
  • Case Management
  • Victim Advocacy- provided in municipal and justice courts in Jones, Jasper, Smith, Greene, Wayne, Covington, Forrest, Lamar, and Marion counties.
